Olympic Games Uniforms
Who knows stuff about Equestrian in the Olympic Games or just Equestrian?
What is the equipment and uniforms we use and wear right now for Equestrian and back lots and lots of years ago like 1930′s, 1940′s what was the equipment and uniforms they used and wore back then?
Prior to the second World War, most of the people who participated in the equestrian portion of the Olympics were usually military officers, and they generally wore their dress uniforms, except during the cross country portion of the 3 Day Event, when they wore a work uniform and a soldier’s helmet. Also, up until the 1950′s, women were excluded from participation in the equestrian sports- and even once they were allowed to compete, it took years before they really got established as top competitors.
The equipment and tack worn by the horses hasn’t changed much in centuries- they still wear the same English tack that earlier generations of horses did. The saddles are lighter now, and are more likely to be made out of things like fiberglass or other ultralight materials, but by and large, they are still covered with leather. The uniforms and clothing worn by the riders HAVE changed a great deal, though- the jodphurs the men wore have been replaced by breeches, which are less bulky and a lot more attractive to look at, and both genders now wear coats with their country’s colors. In dressage, the rules require both men and women to wear black boots, white breeches, a black or navy blue coat called a shadbelly, and a silk top hat. Women with long hair are expected to have it neatly contained in a net- and jewelry and makeup must be conservative and kept to a minimum. A white shirt and stock tie, with an appropriate pin, is also required of dressage competitors. Horses in that sport must wear double bridles, and riders are required to wear spurs, though they cannot be excessively long or sharp. Whips are permitted in the warmup area, but NOT in competition. Gloves must be worn as well, and they must match the rider’s coat.
The only exception to the rules regarding attire in this sport concerns those riders who can prove that they are on active duty in either the police force or military of their home country at the time of competition. In their case, the rules allow them to compete in a dress uniform, and to use a military hand salute in place of the regular salute. Otherwise, there are no exceptions to the dress code, not in dressage. In the other two sports,Eventing and Show Jumping, a rider is expected to wear neat, safe, conservative attire which is well maintained, and ALL RIDERS MUST WEAR A HELMET and safety gear. That’s one way in which these two sports differ from dressage, because dressage riders only wear a silk top hat.
If you are talking about riders from the USA who compete in either Show Jumping or Eventing, the typical attire for them depends on which part of the competition they are in. For cross country day, most riders wear breeches, a short sleeved shirt with a plastic armband on their right arm ( which holds the rider’s medical card with emergency information on it) a pinny ( which is a vest that has the rider’s number and the name and logo of the competition on it) a body protector, and a helmet on their head. Most riders also wear a watch with a second hand, because it is their responsibility to keep track of the time, and know where they are with it and what they need to do to keep on track. Gloves are a common sight as well during this phase, because they help keep the riders’ hands from slipping on the reins, and prevent blisters. Horses wear a jumping saddle, a bridle, and boots on their legs. For Show Jumping, our riders wear a red coat with a blue collar and white binding, a white shirt, white or buff breeches, tall black boots, and a helmet. That red coat, incidentally, cannot be worn by just anyone who wants to- it is a privilege granted only to those riders who have represented the US in international competition and done well. It has to be earned- it is never given.
